Located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the Olduvai
George, 180km from Arusha.It was here that Dr. Louis Leakey discovered
the remains of Homo hablis or "Handy Man" regarded asmankind's
first step on the ladder of human evalution.Nearby is Laetoli,
where the footprints of hominoids (said to be 3,5 million years
old) were discovered by Mrs. Leakey in 1979. To the north is the
Oldoinyo Lengai (Mountain of God), a living volcano. Around these
sites if mans origin teem millions of wild animals.
 But
many more fossils have been discovered here including thoseof
prehistoric elephants, giant horned sheep and enormous ostriches.
